Change the Outlook Offline files (.ost) location

by Gabriel Lozano-Moran 14. January 2008 17:07

When you configure Outlook for an Exchange account the Offline file (.ost) will be placed by default in the following folder:

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.ost

In this post I will show you how to move the .ost file to the D:\Mail\ folder. Double-click the Mail applet in the Control Panel (Windows Vista's 64-bit: Where is the 'Mail' icon in the Control Panel?) to open the Mail Setup - Outlook dialog.

Click the Data Files... button.

Select the data file from the list and click Settings...

Uncheck Use Cached Exchange Mode and click Apply and then click Offline Folder File Settings...

Click Disable Offline Use.

Answer Yes on the Microsoft Office Outlook Offline Folders dialog. Reopen the Offline Folder File Settings dialog and this time you will notice that the Browse button is enabled.

Click the Browse button and specify the new location for your Offline Folder File.

Click OK.

Click Yes to create to .ost file.

Check Use Cached Exchange Mode and click OK. Restart Outlook. That's it!

There is a good program-open ost file, open *.ost files and convert them into *.pst files, that can be opened by any program, compatible with Microsoft Outlook email client, allows opening ost files and to store your personal data independently from Microsoft Exchange Server, it is very important, if you'd like to access your contacts and email archive from outside of your company, convert them to a suitable format, that can be read by other email client.
