Unable to install Visual Studio .NET on a 64-bit operating system

Today I was to cleaning up my development workstation. I am running Windows XP Pro x64 and I wanted to uninstall Visual Studio .NET Professional 2003 as I haven’t used it and never will again. I was very surprised to see this dialog when I clicked on the Change/Remove button in the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel applet:

Googling around for a solution it seems that I am not the only one with this problem, and so far there are no real solution beside people performing clean installations of Windows, which I find a bit a drastic solution to the problem…

It seems that you can bypass the 64bit verification check (see https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/165182/visual-studio-2003-does-not-re-install#tabs)

The workaround is to install it on a 64-bit environment unfortunately not to uninstall it. I have tried the workaround but it still does not work to uninstall it. The workaround allows me to start the installation wizard but I cannot start the uninstaller. That is because the uninstaller uses a different setup.exe that uses a different setup.exe. If I spent some more time on this I can hex edit that setup.exe to workaround the 64-bit check and then I can uninstall Visual Studio .NET on my machine...
